Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of medication safety practices at KKESH. It focuses on preventing medication errors by strengthening staff knowledge of safe prescribing, dispensing, administration, and reporting processes. Learners will explore common causes of medication errors, high-alert medications, allergy documentation, look-alike/sound-alike risks, and KKESH reporting systems. The course emphasizes safe clinical decision-making, patient protection, and building a just culture of safety and learning.

 


Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define medication errors, near misses, ADEs, ADRs, and Just Culture principles
  • Identify High Alert Medications, LASA drugs, error-prone abbreviations, and concentrated electrolytes at KKESH
  • Apply the five rights of medication administration and KKESH safety protocols
  • Document allergies correctly and execute verbal/telephone order procedures
  • Perform independent double-checks and medication reconciliation processes
  • Recognize and respond to anaphylaxis using emergency protocols
  • Utilize safety technologies including CPOE, smart pumps, and barcoding systems
  • Report medication incidents through SALAMAH and classify harm severity
  • Implement error prevention strategies using the hierarchy of effectiveness
  • Promote a culture of safety through patient education and continuous improvement
